Below is a copy of our local councils proposed code of conduct.
Personally I agree with all of it and it seems to me to be all common sense.
I know of some local drivers who are whinging about it but the local trade desperately needs to improve standards of both cars and drivers.
It doesn't take more than a quick look around our local ranks and driver hangouts to spot a minority of drivers who fail to keep themselves and the cars which earn them a living clean and tidy.
The biggest problem in the local trade is simply apathy, drivers will moan and whinge about the trade between themselves but wont bother to get up off there butts and do something about it.
A copy of this proposed code of conduct has been sent to all the drivers but most of them if they bother to read it at all will simply moan about the cheek of the local council expecting them to come to the WORKPLACE clean and tidy.
I just wonder if this code of conduct will be enforced, I sincerely hope so!
We are often the first point of contact when we pick up people from out of the town, what sort of first impression do we want to leave them with!
So does this mean that Taxi Drivers don't have the God Given Right to block a road while waiting for a fare and then giving you the two finger salute when you look at him in an annoyed manor?
I thought the Flashing Indicator Lights on a Taxi stood for 'I am the Master Of This Road, now find another way around, you fool'.
Glad to see the rules... now I can quote them at those Drivers that
a) use their horn whilst stationary
b) Leave their engines running for a prolonged time
c) Block the road.
Mmm this sound like a troll, maybe from a local journo eh! How's life in your annoyed "manor" But still hey ho.
I blame the customers myself why on earth do they insist on the taxi picking them up right outside the front door. I mean whats wrong with taking a walk to the nearest car park and waiting in the wind and rain there.
Before you kick off, Anonymous - look up the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire exemptions. I think they are in the Local Councils Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1979 (off the top of my head).
Taxis CAN wait anywhere they wish which isn't on a junction or in a bus stop.
And if they are collecting a registered disabled passenger, they are exempt from things such as purchasing parking tickets, are allowed to wait in disabled bays, and so forth.
On topic though,
Doesn't the handbook up there already have this stuff inside it? Torbay do, and they are actually quite strict about it.
Also, these are proposed rules. So don't go quoting them just yet. If you have a problem with a driver report him to the council.
No, not a journalist... Just someone who is sick of taxi drivers thinking they can park in the middle of a road when there is only a single car width available. Its the look they give you when you have the audacity to want to pass them.
Anon Lets get it right taxi drivers do not park in the middle of the road they simply stop to load or unload.
Indeed a remarkable and important post. All are very important but basic rules. Hope this will happen in reality.
I worked for a company in San Diego with a uniform policy of their own, it wasn't written down however. Actually none their rules were. Boy it was a strange place there.
I just recently started blogging about my life as a taxi driver if you get a chance - http://corruptionincortez.blogspot.com/
I linked back to your site as well.
Take care - Henry
Of course, anonymous, because private car drivers are so polite and courteous when they are asked to move from a bus stop/taxi rank/loading bay by the rightful user.
If a van stops in a bus stop, or if I stop in a loading bay, we all move out of the way when required. When I (politely and apologetically) tell someone they are parked on a taxi rank and must move, I get abuse, and on one occasion - someone tried to run me over.
Taxis and private hire vehicles are permitted to pick up and set down on double yellows, the fact 'so many' drivers are giving you funny looks would probably suggest you have plenty of room to get by, but you'd rather make a scene of your objection to someone stopping on double yellow lines.
The next time a taxi is supposedly blocking the road, why not take a picture and share it with us?
Totally agree with all you say there Devon, good stuff.
I don't get all that worked up when taxi drivers stop in the road to wait for a fare. It's not a big deal, people are in such a rush for nothing. People who don't drive taxi's, or work in some field of transportation have no idea about the stress of driving that comes with some of San Diego's terrible drivers. The thing that gets me all stirred up is when someone just parks in the road and their friend comes up to them and talks at them through the window. That's a little much. The 10 seconds that a taxi is blocking the road is not a big deal.
If anyone is interested, this is my blog about san diego cabbing -
The road I live on is three cars wide... two widths are taken by parked vehicles leaving one for the traffic. If a Taxi pulls up in a space created by the houses driveways and makes an attempt to allow traffic to flow then I do not have a problem. However when a taxi parks along side that space and just sits there they deserve no patience from any other driver.
Respect goes both ways. The road I live on is also a rat run. However I will take an image and post.
What does my head in is the amount of roadworks on our motorways, especially the M60.
when you go down on a saturday night and they have closed it and nobody is working on it.
OMG! They want you to be polite and neat AND show up on time??? what are they thinking?
Seriously, as the owner of a small cab company in Phoenix Arizona, I endeavor to hire only drivers who behave politely and civilly as second nature. I cannot fathom a cab company keeping rude, obnoxious drivers. what about the cab companies in England? Don't they have a say in who drives for them? Can't they dismiss the numbskulls from the ranks? Or are the drivers somehow protected from dismissal?
What's the rationale for not having clothing with sharp edges. What an absurd list. It's funny that they have to tell drivers that they can't have bare chests.
You should see my rulebook Henry. It explicitly states that the boot, or windows, are NOT to be used for entry or egress....
These are common code of conduct but some of the points are really strict to obey.

really very informative post, thanks for sharing this blog.
Taxi Service to Philadelphia Airport
Interesting info, thanks for sharing.
Every driver should use follow this taxi driver's Code of Conduct. The passengers should always hire a professional taxi driver who is linked to a registered company. I live in Frimley, UK and always use the service of Frimley Taxis and private hire company. Very clean taxis and license holder drivers.
Very useful information. I,m running a taxi business called Walton Taxis and i was not aware that the Code of Conduct could be this much useful. Thanks for sharing this.
Taxis fare seems high but that more reliable
The most important reason for people traveling in a farnborough taxi service is o enjoy the ride. When one is moving on his own, it is almost impossible for the person to enjoy the ride, but in a taxi, one gets immense time to do this.
