Another Tin Shed

Now that Barrow's Mall frontage has been completed after its thirty year overdue renovation I have been asking my fares what they think of the new look. The vast majority like me think it’s a cheap and nasty bodge up. Comments from my fares include “It doesn't go with the red brick and sandstone of the surrounding buildings" and "It looks like a giant washing machine or fridge" or "It's just been covered with cheap and tacky white tin sheets."
I suppose anything is an improvement over what went before but Barrow folk deserve better than yet another tin shed, we seem to have cornered the market with those already. What makes it look even worse is the nasty splodge of badly laid cheap tarmac masquerading as a pavement outside the front.

Wow that looks a bit different to when I last saw it.

I think I preferred it as it was - always thought it just sort of faded into the background, unnoticed, even if it was ugly when you did notice it. Now it would draw the eyes straight away, and it looks far too white and plain. A splash of colour would transform that.

I'm certainly no architect either, so it makes you wonder who came up with it and what they were thinking!

deryk: Yes as I say it's just another Hollywood Park style tin shed, even the DDH has more style.

I guess i'm in the minority in Barrow then as i quite like it! To me it is nice to see something a bit different, most town centres that i go to these days always look the same, the shops are the same and the pedestrianised areas look the same. Thumbs up from me!!

Anon - fair enough comment, I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this case but indeed it's sad how a lot of town and shopping centres are becoming clones.

I'm not really a Barrow Person (live in Ulverston) but I thought the various statues depicting Barrow's history were a pretty cool idea - showing that the town centre can have its own character without being plain weird.

Anything is better than the shambles that was there before, but not much better.
