Nits

My fare was a young mother who I had picked up going to a local primary school to pick up her two children. The two youngsters ran out of the school gates and jumped into the car both waving a piece of paper excitedly at their mum" we've got a letter for you mam" they shouted. The mother took the letters and read them, but didn't say a word. As we drove towards their home the kids were jumping about all over the place, and one of them kept straining forward and putting his head up to my ear to tell me all about what they did at school that day. "What was the letter about mam" asked the younger kid, she didn't answer and so he kept asking again and again. After a while the older kid ,who I couldn't help but notice kept scratching his head shouted "it's about the nits that are going round the school again!" The mother said nothing but went really red when they both started scratching like mad for the rest of the ride home. I know it was probably just physiological, but I was really struggling to stop myself from scratching my head until they had got out.

I never had headlice when I was a child. I had to wait until I was a parent. My lovely boys brought headlice home not once but twice! Infected little monsters! I too am scratching just thinking about it.

TP is a teacher and nits go through the school occasionally. Even though she doesn't get them, I get an attack of the scratches as soon as I hear about them!

In all the time I was in primary school (South Walney in the 50's & 60's) not one child was ever discovered with nits - and that nit nurse came round pretty regularly. When my 3 were in primary school (Edinburgh) they were forever bringing home those dreaded letters heralding nits.

It is said that because children's hair is cleaner nowadays that the nit is able to cling on. In our day there would be so much grease and filth in our hair that they would have had no chance.

My daughters school is dreadful. I constantly have to get rid of them :( And its all down to lazy parents who wont spend 5-10 mins a day checking their childrens hair. Probably because they think their 'precious' wouldnt get them, when in fact its those kids that are keeping the nits going. Rant over lol
